How to Write on Painted Furniture

I have been writing on painted furniture a lot lately and have discovered a simple and beautiful way to achieve a perfect look… no matter how good or bad your hand writing is.  This process can be applied to just about anything you want to add writing to; furniture, chalkboards, mirrors, etc…

Here are the quick and easy steps.

1. Find a piece of furniture that you would like to add some words too.  I had this little vintage rocker that was just so cute and sweet and I have been wanting to recreate it; it was perfect for this project.

2. Paint the piece in the colour of your choice and let it fully dry.  I chose Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Dried Lavender for the overall colour of the rocker. 3. Choose your word or design and print it out on a laser or ink jet printer.  I chose the word “sweetness” for the rocker as it seemed to embrace the charm of whomever would sit in it.

4. Lay the design on the painted piece and tape down just the top edge.  Tip: You may need to cut the letters apart to fit how you would like them.  I wanted the letters to follow the curve of the top of the rocker so cut them apart and re-spaced them to fit.  5. Lay a piece of carbon paper under the letters and begin to trace around the entire edge of each one with a pencil or pen.  Tip: I prefer to trace the letters with a red pen because of the fine point and the red allows me to easily see what I have traced so far.  6. Once you have traced all of the edges, remove the paper, carbon paper and tape.  Underneath you will have a perfect copy of your chosen word or pattern.  7. Trace and fill in each letter with a small, angled paint brush.  I used Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black to paint the letters on the rocker.  Fusion Mineral Paint is a fairly thin paint so I like how it flows easily off of the brush and fills in the letters precisely.  To finish off the piece when the writing was dry, I distressed the edges to give a worn and vintage feel and then gave the entire piece a coat of Miss Mustard Seed Hemp Oil for durability.  I now have a perfect little embellishment to a sweet little vintage rocker and a method to add writing that I will be able to use again and again in so many different ways.
