Mix & Match: Side Tables to Benches

The products used for this project were generously provided by Fairfield World but the genuine (and sometimes witty) opinions expressed are completely my own.

We are coming to the end of another month and that means another super fun project for The Fab Furniture Flippin’ Contest!  (You can check out my previous projects for this group here and here)  This month our theme was Mix & Match and the Sponsor was Fairfield World.FFFC main graphic updated (10.2015)-3I have to admit that I didn’t know a whole lot about Fairfield World before I began this challenge but the more I learned about them, the more I was thrilled to be able to work with such a cool company!  some products received from Fairfield WorldFairfield World is a family owned business that is celebrating their 75th Anniversary this year and their collection of products is incredible.  They carry everything from foam to fabric to fillers.
two outdated side tables before being recreatedFor the Mix & Match challenge this month, I wanted to create something out of these two very outdated side tables that I had kicking around.  With there being two tables, I thought it would be cool to turn them into benches that could be used either as one long coffee table, two updated side tables or as extra seating when needed.  two old side tables painted greyI began the project by painting both tables in a custom mix, medium grey colour.  measuring a coffee table on a piece of foamTo create the seating for the benches, I first traced the table tops onto the Foamology Foam.  This foam is a nice thick, flat one that would work perfectly to not only set something on but provide a nice cushy seat.  using an electric knife to cut foamTo cut the foam I used an electric knife.  Tip: you can usually find electric knives by the droves in thrift stores so you can pick one up really cheap.  If you have struggled to ever cut foam before, this is the magic answer!  Using an electric knife allows you to cut the foam perfectly straight and it slides through it like butter.  two piece of foam cut to fit the top of two painted side tablesOnce the foam was cut, I sprayed the table tops and under side of the foam with spray adhesive and then stuck them together.  The adhesive will keep the foam securely in place and keep it from slipping around once the project is finished.  measuring a piece of batting to cover a painted coffee table and foamTo make the foam and table edges a little softer and smoother, I covered the entire top with two layers of the flat batting.  using a Stanley nail and staple gun to attach batting to a wood tableI measured out a piece that was large enough to wrap under the edge of the table and then used a staple gun to secure it in place.  two old coffee tables painted grey with Fairfield World foam and battingcutting some Spoonflower fabric to cover an old coffee tableFor the covering on the new benches, I chose a heavy, cotton, Spoonflower fabric in greys, pinks and creams.  It is absolutely gorgeous fabric! two outdated coffee table painted and covered with Spoonflower fabricI applied the fabric in the same way that I applied the two flat batting layers…  attaching a fabric skirt to a covered benchand added a skirt made out of the same fabric around the edge of the seat.  I wanted to cover up those weird little square leg pieces that made the tables look outdated and the skirt was the perfect solution.  using a glue gun to attach trim to benchesTo finish the look off (and to cover up the staples and edge of the skirt) I attached a cream coloured cotton trim. two outdated side tables recreated with fabric and paintan old coffee table turned into extra seatingNot only were these outdated side tables given a new life… outdated side table turned into extra seatingbut they also provide extra seating when needed.  Spoonflower fabric turned into two side tablesI love how the mix of the beautiful fabric, the old side tables and the cream cotton trim all work so well together to create a unique new look. two outdated side tables turned into a long coffee table and benches

A huge thanks to Fairfield World for providing the foam and batting necessary to create such a fun new look!
