Reusing Old Oak Drawers

This beautiful set of oak drawers was another one of my dump store finds.  Back when I was on vacation in September (read about it here), I just happened to be at the dump one day when a man asked me if I would like them!  Umm, yes please!  Of course I could not pass them up.The drawers are really deep and  I am guessing that they were once part of a large oak desk.  I can just imagine that huge desk consuming the office it was in, filled with papers and ledgers, larger than life.  I bet it was beautiful! With the set of drawers being so heavy and solid, I wanted to give them a makeover that would lighten them up.The first thing that needed changing were those large wood handles.  To give the piece it’s new, lighter feel, new handles were definitely in order.

I filled the holes, sanded them smooth and drilled a new hole for the single knobs that would adorn each drawer.  I got these beautiful mercury glass knobs from Country Chic Paint and trust me, the picture does not begin to do them justice.  They are so, so pretty!  To make the drawers a little more special after I had painted them in Simplicity, I used the [easyazon_link identifier=”B00JG9M5PY” locale=”CA” tag=”recredesig-20″]Deco Art Americana Decor Stencil, Old French Script[/easyazon_link] with some Coastal Fog paint.  I have used this stencil before (here) and love how it subtly adds a little something.  To lighten up the rest of the set of drawers, two coats of All-In-One Paint in Simplicity on the outside and two coats of All-In-One Paint in Coastal Fog on the inside was all it took. I finished off the entire piece with a coat of glaze.  The Clear glaze, mixed with a hint of Silver Bullet Metallic Cream gave a beautiful warm and weathered look to the Simplicity. I love Grey and white together… it is so classic and soft.  This heavy, Oak chest of drawers is certainly more befitting of an airy, cozy room now and the beautiful grey and white are simply perfect with the Mercury knobs!
