Making Over Mid-Century Modern Night Stands

My computer broke this week and I feel absolutely lost without it!  Since I am unable to work on new posts right now, I thought I would re-share one of my favourite projects from 2015.

Are you ever drawn to things that you wouldn’t normally be?
I find that more and more lately I am, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it is not because my personal style is changing but rather my crazy, deep desire to recreate everything that looks sad and forlorn!
My dad and I were poking through a charity shop one day and we can across these Mid-Century Modern night stands.  Despite the fact that they were covered in dust, weren’t my typical style and were stuffed way up high on an industrial shelf I was drawn to their clean lines and low height. When I began undertaking their recreation, I wanted to keep true to their style and choose a colour for both the paint and stain that would honour and enhance that.
the wood handle of a retro nightstand
inside the drawer of a vintage nightstandThe raw wood parts (legs, handles and drawers) were quite banged up and I didn’t want to leave them as is so used a Gel Stain from General Finishes in Java to darken them up. I stained all of the legs, the drawer handles (with a little tiny brush because it was built-in) and the inside of the drawers with 2 coats of the Java Gel.  The darker colour really cleaned up the uneven wood tones and added a rich warm one once it was paired with the paint.
For the body of the night stands, I chose Arles coloured Chalk Paint by Annie Sloan.  Arles is a beautiful yellow that changes from sunny yellow to a deep, orang-y yellow depending on the light and time of day.I absolutely love how the Arles and the dark Java Gel stain looked together… very retro and perfect for this style of piece!
I wouldn’t normally have been drawn to this type of furniture, but am so glad that I trusted my heart and picked up this beautiful pair!

Pin for later… Making over Mid-Century-Modern night stands with Annie Sloan Paint in Arles and General Finishes Java Gel Stain

Thanks Mary! I have to say that I don’t have much yellow in my house, but I am always drawn to it. It is just so pretty <3

You are so right Coco… it is great to get out of your comfort zone once in awhile and definitely helps you to grow! The best part about these night stands was that I found them for $1 each!! I really loved this project in particular πŸ™‚ and I was sad to see them go to their new home.
