Celery is the Best Paint Brush You’ll Use all Season!

If you are looking for something totally different to do this Fall with paint, look no further! πŸ˜‰ Grab some celery from your fridge and I promise you, it will be the best “paint brush” you have used in a long time.using celery to design a Fall pillowThe last time I was at IKEA, I grabbed a couple of these plain, white pillow covers ($5 each) to make some Fall pillows for my Living Room.

I wanted the pillows to be colourful and pretty but not overly busy.cutting off the part of a celery stalk needed to print a Fall pillow coverTo make the Fall flowers on the pillow covers, I used celery to do some stamping.   Yep, celery stamping.  It is so easy, seriously,  anyone who can cut celery can do it!

Start by cutting of the end of a celery stalk a few finger widths from the end.end of a celery stalk used for stamping with paintI put a wide elastic around it once it was cut just to make sure the pieces stayed in place.  Can you see the flower pattern?  Isn’t it pretty!fall paint colours in brown, yellow, red and orangeSince this was going to be a Fall pillow, I used some red, yellow and orange paint for the flowers and brown for the vines.

In case you are wondering, the colours I used were Country Chic Paint in Chocolate Tart, Country Chic Paint in Creme Brulee, Fusion Mineral Paint in Fort York Red and Annie Sloan Chalk Paint in Barcelona Orange.adding paint to the end of a celery stalkTo blend the colours together, I used a small paint brush to add the paint to the celery end.  I started my design with a flower in the corner that had all three colours…red, yellow and orange rose type flower stamped with celeryand then made others from there.creating flowers with paint and a celery stalkTo make the design a little fuller, add some vines and small hand painted flowers.

You can paint the details free hand.  I love how the paint blends on the flowers and vines to look like a water-colour painting.adding brown vines with Country Chic Paint in Chocolate TartI finished my pillow off with the word “fall”.  It was printed on a sheet of paper and then traced onto the pillow with a sheet of graphite paper.  (you can see that process in more detail here)

    Is it washable?

Yes, you can wash it but you will want to wait for 30 days until the paint has fully cured. I would recommend hand washing. You can also spray it with a coat of Scotch Guard to protect it from stains/spills after the paint is dry.
