Candle Holders of All Sorts

Candles add such a beautifully soft light source to any room that long after they stopped being a necessity, they are still present in most homes.  There is nothing like sitting by the glow of a candle and the sweet shadows it creates.  Whether inside during the cold nights of winter or outside in the warmth of summer, candles play a comforting role in most of our lives.
Candle holders can be found in abundance in thrift shops and charity stores but are frequently outdated or banged up.  Look beyond their exterior though and you can usually find some beautifully shaped holders that can easily be recreated.  Some inexpensive holders, a little bit of paint and a wee bit of creativity and you have a simple way to add some colour and warmth to any space for next to nothing.
Here are a few that I have acquired and updated with paint…
I found this candle holder at a thrift store for about a dollar!  I used a beautiful pale yellow latex paint, that I already had on hand, to spruce up the grey metal and some light distressing after it was dry to give it a whole new feel.  I added the paper flowers for a touch of spring and love how the yellow and orange play together.
This pair of candle holders was being given away because they were a green glass that didn’t match anything anymore.  I updated them will a little Provence coloured Chalk Paint from Annie Sloan, distressed them lightly and added some lovely paper flowers to give them a Shabby Chic feel.
These glass holders were another pair that was being given away. They were simply updated with a soft creamy latex paint and distressed to bring out their curvy lines.  I added the paper flowers again to add a touch of spring softness.

Finally, this beautiful silver plated candelabra was found at a flea market for $8.  It was dingy and a little bent but all of it’s sparkly crystals were there and it had a gorgeous shape.  It was brought back to life with a custom mix of Annie Sloan Chalk Paint, bent back into shape and distressed.  I absolutely love how this piece looked in the soft pink and cream with a hint of silver showing through.

It is so easy to add a little spring colour and cheer to your home for next to nothing.  The next time you see an inexpensive candle holder, look past it’s dings and dirt to it’s lines and beauty.  When you have found a shape you like, add a little paint and embellishment and you have a beautiful new accessory for you cherished space!
