Help! Help! Help!

Was: Outdated side table
Recreated Into: Updated and function toy storage

I don’t have any true before pictures of this piece as it was started by a client of mine.  She picked this piece up at a yard sale and it was stained an dark, oriental red colour that just needed to go 🙂

The client began recreating the piece herself but after several coats of milk paint, the red paint and stains began showing through and and the top was pitted all over. As she became more and more frustrated, but unwilling to let this beautiful piece go, she called me to see what I could do.

After seeing the piece, I decided to use Annie Sloan Chalk Paint® overtop of the milk paint.  ASCP is a quite a bit thicker than Milk Paint so with it being a light colour and the darker one underneath, I wanted the thickness of the Chalk Paint to help cover to dark stain.  After sanding the top and painting on 2 coats of ASCP I finished the piece with a natural bees wax furniture polish.

This piece truly is a one of a kind now and looks wonderful in the client’s living room.

Never be afraid to try something… even if it doesn’t go exactly how you imagined, it can always be fixed and finished.  Sometimes you may need to switch paths mid-course, but the outcome is always worth the process and painting outdated furniture is an incredible way to save something that functionally is still very useful.
