There is nothing so lovely at Christmas as the smell of fresh-cut evergreen trees. I love the smell of having a fresh tree in the house. This year I decided I really wanted a fresh tree even if it was small.
Ottawa’s Byward Market
There is an amazing market in downtown Ottawa that sells every size of fresh-cut tree you can imagine during the holiday season.
I took a trip down last weekend and grabbed my camera on the way out to snap some pics for you.
This area of Ottawa is called the Byward market and is one of Canada’s oldest and largest public markets having been established in 1826.
During the holiday season, the streets are filled with fresh-cut Christmas trees from a wide variety of vendors. It is such a special time to visit the market. As soon as you step out of your car, you can smell the evergreens in the air ♥
The businesses in the area go all out to make the market look festive with trees, lights, and decorations everywhere.
The Parliament Buildings
The market is only steps away from the Parliament Buildings (it is the capital of Canada after all) and you can see the Peace Tower behind all of those gorgeous smelling trees. It makes such a pretty sight.
Having so much history in the area only adds to the incredible charm and beauty of the market at this time of year.
My tree
After spending some time grabbing brunch and walking around absorbing the charm and beauty, I chose a small tree to take home.
It wasn’t big, but just the size I was looking for bring the outdoors in and add some life and Christmasy smell to the house. Not to mention it was just the right size to pop in the back of my car 😉
Once home, I trimmed a few of the lowest branches off and then it fit perfectly into a large vintage crock I had.
The smell it brings to the living room is everything that I love about the season and when I sit near it, I can help but smile at the scent of Christmas in the air.
I hope that you are taking some time to enjoy the little things you love this holiday season! Sometimes it is the smallest scents or sights that remind us how special the holiday season is!
Wishing you the Merriest of Christmases my dear friends ♥
In case you missed it…
