Painting Drawers Adds An Element of Fun

The City of Ottawa has a wonderful weekend each fall called Give Away Weekend.  Give Away Weekend provides people an opportunity to place their unwanted items on their curb or grass and others can pick them up to reuse, recycle or recreate them.  It is an incredible way to promote reuse and I am hoping that it continues to grow each year both in our community and others!
This past fall, my sister and I perused a few parts of the city during Give Away Weekend and this is one of the beautiful items that we found.  It is an antique side table that was in pretty rough shape but had some gorgeous details like the spindle legs and circle carvings! I was thrilled to find it, pile it in my car and cart it home in order to bring it back to life.
The top of the piece was in the worst shape, but I am never scared of a few chips, nicks and cracks.  Those are all of the things, in my humble opinion, that I make a piece truly beautiful and unique.
The side table came with this lovely knob that matched the wood circle carvings in the corners of the piece so I definitely wanted to re-use it.  I cleaned it up and used Silver Leaf Rub n’ Buff to give it a more modern look. You can read about that process here.
I chose a beautiful dark grey called Hurricane from Country Chic Paints for the main body of the side table and it brought out it’s charm and beauty perfectly.  I really wanted to do something fun inside of the drawer so I used a fun, bright and lively blue latex paint that I had on hand.  The blue complements the grey so well yet adds an element of surprise for someone who wants a more neutral piece on the outside.
To finish the piece off, I added a little flower on each side of the drawer – just for fun, highlighted the circle carvings with a hint of blue latex and Silver Leaf Rub n’ Buff and lightly distressed the entire piece.

I love that this piece now looks great in any room because of it’s neutral colour but yet has a wonderful surprise waiting on the inside for anyone who dares to look. 🙂

What an awesome idea…a community give away day! I love the side of the drawer detail. Makes the piece feel extra special. I found this on Link Party Palooza.

I love that idea too and am hoping that it will continue to grow each year here and more people get involved. It is such a wonderful way to let someone else have what you are not using and keep it from ending up in the landfill 🙂
