Paint an Oh Canada Flag Sign to Celebrate Canada Day!

Canada Day is just around the corner and what better way to show your patriotic love then to add a Canada Flag sign to your home, backyard or cottage?

I designed this sign so that it could be hung outside but it will be perfect in any space you choose.  Here is how to make your own Oh Canada Flag sign…

Stain the Board

Using a piece of wood cut approximately 12″ by 15″, stain it grey with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk paint in Shutter Grey.  Milk Paint makes a fantastic stain and wears beautifully outside.  This colour of grey gives the wood a beautiful look of old cedar.

To mix a stain, use one part milk paint to 2-3 parts water.  The less water, the more opaque the grey will be.

Be sure to paint all sides and ends of the board.

Taping Off and Painting the Sign

To start creating your sign, tape off 3-3.5″ at the bottom of the board when looking at it horizontally.   I like to use a low-tac tape, like Frog tape, when putting it over paint so that I don’t have to worry about it peeling up the paint when I remove it.

Leave the bottom part grey and paint the rest of the board with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Farmhouse White.

Next, tape off either side of the board (from the lower tape upwards) making sections that are approximately 4-4.5″ wide.  Paint these new side sections using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Tricycle.

Once the paint has dried, carefully remove the tape.

Adding the Script and Maple Leaf

I have created a Pattern to make this part of the sign as easy as possible.  You can find the Pattern for the Oh Canada! and Maple leaf here…

Once you have downloaded the Pattern, simply transfer it to your sign.  The carbon paper transfer method is the best on this sign.  You can find those directions here.

Paint the Maple leaf and script using the same red paint you used for the side sections of your flag.

Finishing Your New Sign

To finish up your new sign, give it a coat (or two) of Hemp Oil.  Just rub it on with an old sock (on all sides) and you are good to go.  The Hemp Oil will harden and cure to a beautiful clear finish and will protect your sign for years to come.
