Celebrating Canada’s 150 with a Milk Paint Forest

I love Canada! I honestly couldn’t ask for a better country to live in.

This year, Canada is celebrating its 150th Birthday and everyone is crazy excited!

Canada is not a terribly old country but it is filled with warm people, gorgeous landscapes and a rich history.  A few months ago I was asked to create a piece of furniture that represented Canada for an exhibit.  I was given free rein on the design as long as it celebrated Canada.  Salvaged Art Deco dresser before being painted for a Canada 150 exhibitRight away I had a vision in mind and began hunting for the perfect piece to recreate.

I went out hunting and found this beauty.  (you can see what else I found on that trip here…)Art Deco dresser salvaged before paintingThe height and style were perfect for what I had in mind. Canada is overflowing with beautiful, green forests and since I am an outdoor lover, I wanted my piece to represent those breathtaking trees.  Vintage fan and antique berry box sitting on an old dresser painted greenDresser painted with Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Luckett's Green, Layla's Mint and BoxwoodMiss Mustard Seed Milk Paint was my choice right from the beginning to paint the dresser.  It’s unpredictability and chippiness would give my vision the worn, aged looked I wanted.

With Luckett’s Green as the backdrop, I used a Royal Design Studio stencil called Timberland to create the forest of trees. Royal Design Studio Timberaland stencil for Canada 150 dresserLayla’s Mint and Boxwood helped make the perfect trees.  Miss Mustard Seed Milk Paint in Curio on the inside of dresser drawersThe drawers were all painted in Curio to give the appearance of a dark, rich wood inside.  Wrought Iron hardware painted to look oldAnd new wrought iron handles were added and painted so that they blend right in.  Old dresser painted with milk paintI couldn’t be happier with how this piece turned out.

I hope it represents the abundance of green forests we have in Canada and Canadians love for the outdoors.  Canada 150 dresser painted to represent Canada's forests and treesTo see this piece on display, you can visit Malenka Originals in Ottawa.

The piece will also be available for purchase mid-July.
