I love everything about September! Sunny days, cool night, crisp apples, and the hints of change in the air. September always feels like a new year and a fresh start to me. It is probably leftover feelings from my days in university and when I was teaching, but none the less, it feels like a special month to me.
Associating apples with this time of year is something I have always done. (find another apple project here) There is nothing like a freshly picked apple and there is nothing better than a sunny, warm fall day spent at the apple orchard.
The Thrifted Find
Even though it is not quite apple orchard time yet, it hasn’t stopped me from bringing that farm-fresh feeling into my home. A few weeks ago I found this peach (I think?) shaped cutting board at a thrift store for a dollar. It wasn’t quite apple shaped but it was pretty darn close.
Cutting the Wood
I figured a little tweaking at the bottom of the cutting board with my small table saw would make it into an apple easy enough. Then, add a piece of scrap wood into the mix and I had the makings of some rustic apple decor.
Painting the Wood
With my apple and arrow cut out, I gave each a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Curio. The brown paint gave the pieces a more uniform and aged barn wood look.
To make the cutting board and arrow apple ready, they also got a coat of Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint in Tricycle. For added texture, I threw in a few scoops of Saltwash once the paint was mixed but before it was applied.
Assembling the Sign
My DIY apple sign definitely needed a few leaves and some burlap ribbon did the trick. I folded the ribbon over and cut out two leaves at the same time. A little hot glue was all they needed to stay in place.
A little vintage-inspired red ticking ribbon and the cutting board apple was adorned.
I also used the same red ribbon, pushed through a set of drilled holes, to attach the arrow to the apple.

Forgot to say – take your camera! The drive there is lovely; go via Pakenham and stop at the Old Crow Shop (on the main street, near the 5 Span bridge on the right). It’s a great little shop that sells candles, cards and lovely decor items. Pakenham is a beautiful little town and worth the drive. (General Store sells cinnamon buns, bread etc…the smell in there will drive you nuts!)

How cute! I LOVE fall….just wish it lasted longer (like about 6 months!). As soon as late September hits, I am anxiously awaiting MacLaren’s Orchards near Renfrew to announce they are ready. If you haven’t been there, GO. The smell in their apple processing shed is amazing. I always eat at least two on the way home to Clayton. Delish.
