As the holiday frenzy begins to take over, it’s easy to feel the pull toward sparkling lights, Christmas trees, and holiday music. But before rushing into the festive chaos, there’s an opportunity to embrace the quiet beauty of autumn for just a little longer. This is where the practice of slow living and seasonal mindfulness comes in.
What is Slow Living?
Slow living is about intentionally savoring life’s moments rather than rushing through them. Applied to seasonal transitions, it means fully immersing yourself in the present season and honoring its unique qualities before moving on.
Why Fall Deserves More Time
Fall is my favourite season. Its vibrant oranges, golds, and reds are a brief gift. Acknowledging this natural beauty can help ground us and create a sense of gratitude. It offers a calm before the storm of the holiday season. It’s a time for quiet reflection, cozy gatherings, and reconnecting with yourself, and loved ones.
How to Embrace Slow-Living with Fall Decor
Instead of viewing seasonal decorating as a chore, make it an intentional act that brings pleasure. Just the act of creating a beautiful space can bring you joy and happiness and then you have the opportunity to enjoy it each day after.
If you’re unsure where to begin, take a leisurely walk to collect natural items like pinecones, colorful leaves, and branches. These are also perfect to use when you transition your fall decor into winter.
You can also try engaging all of your senses by lighting a fall-scented candle or sipping a cup of cider as you arrange your decor.
Celebrate Fall Traditions
Keep seasonal mindfulness alive by honoring fall-specific traditions. Host a late-season dinner featuring warm soups and hot drinks, create a gratitude jar to reflect on the blessings of the season, or spend a cozy evening simply enjoying the ambiance of your fall-decorated space.
The Benefits of Seasonal Mindfulness
By fully embracing fall and delaying the rush into Christmas decor, you give yourself the gift of peace and presence. You’ll feel less overwhelmed by the impending holiday season. Your space will carry a sense of warmth and authenticity that reflects your connection to nature and the moment. You’ll cultivate gratitude and joy, making the eventual transition to Christmas feel more intentional and meaningful.
This fall, slow down, take a deep breath, and let the season linger. By embracing slow living and seasonal mindfulness, you can savor the beauty of autumn while preparing your heart and home for the festive season ahead.
A couple of years ago you showed Scandinavian stencils. Can you send me info to get them?
Hi Jean, They were called Dala Muses stencils and you can see the post here… https://www.recreateddesigns.com/2019/02/using-the-whimsical-dala-muses-stencils-on-vintage-benches/ I believe these stencils are only currently available in Europe. I haven’t found a place in North America to order them.
