How to make a Vintage Inspired Border with a Doily

Even though, like I said in my last post, I am not ready for summer to end, I have had fun getting some Fall projects ready to go for Autumn.vintage picking basket before being recreatedBack in the early summer, some friends salvaged some of these beautiful vintage picking baskets for me and I have been just itching to use them.  There were several sizes but I was particularly drawn to this shallow shape. I can just image all of the yummy and colourful apples it probably held at one time.

Since I loved the vintage feel of the baskets, I wanted to preserve that feel in my plans to paint it.plastic doily used to make the perfect vintage inspired borderI found this plastic doily at the dump store this summer and thought the pattern around the edges was so lovely.  When I found it, I instantly thought of the baskets and how pretty it would be on them.  adding the perfect vintage looking boarder with a plastic doily and paintTo give the basket my Fall makeover, I gave the middle slats on the outside, a coat of Fusion Mineral Paint in Fort York Red and Inglenook on the inside.

Once the middle was painted, I used the same Fort York Red to paint the vintage inspired border around both edges of the basket.

With the doily being plastic, it held up incredible well with the paint. Paper doilies could be used as well, but you may need a few in case they break down from the wet paint.adding text to a vintage picking basketThe script was added by using graphite paper to outline the words and then painted in with the same Inglenook colour as the inside.
